1.2亿美元比特币挖矿投资告终,Tether因电力纠纷关闭乌拉圭项目
Odaily Planet Daily News Stablecoin issuer Tether entered Uruguay in May 2023, planning to carry out sustainable Bitcoin mining with a locally licensed company and invest in energy production. The project established two mining sites in the Florida province, with an estimated investment of $60 million each, totaling approximately $120 million.
Uruguay's state-owned power company, UTE, and Tether disagreed over the capacity of the power supply contract. Tether's Uruguayan entity, Microfin, stopped paying electricity bills in May 2025 and notified UTE of its intention to terminate the contract in June. On July 25, UTE cut off power to the mining sites. Microfin owed nearly $5 million, with monthly electricity costs of around $2 million.
Tether notified Uruguay's labor authorities on November 25, 2025, of its decision to cease operations, eliminating 30 of the 38 local jobs. UTE stated that Microfin had settled its outstanding debt by December. In 2025, 98% of Uruguay's electricity generation came from renewable sources. (Bitcoin.com News)
