Odaily Planet Daily News: India plans to issue its first tokenized bond in September, issued by state-owned power financier REC, with an expected size of less than 50 billion rupees, approximately $57 million. Indian market regulators and the central bank are jointly promoting a pilot program, with bond issuance and settlement to be conducted using blockchain technology. The bond is expected to be launched during the annual fintech conference in Mumbai in September, initially available only to a small group of investors. Investors will participate through wholesale central bank digital currency wallets and electronic securities wallets. Indian depositories are developing an e-wallet called DEMT 2.0 to record bond holdings via distributed ledgers. The bond will have an initial term of three months, and subsequent trading will be limited to participants who hold both compatible CBDC wallets and securities wallets. A secondary market for tokenized bonds is expected to form by December, and the bonds will not be traded on traditional electronic trading platforms.
