Microsoft plans to release its next-generation MAIA 300 AI chip in September

Odaily News: According to informed sources, Microsoft plans to significantly increase production of its self-designed next-generation AI chip next year, aiming to attract major cloud computing customers including Anthropic to adopt the chip, in an effort to reduce dependence on external AI chip suppliers.

Sources say Microsoft expects to publicly unveil its new-generation AI chip, Maia 300, this fall in September, and it may make its debut as early as next month. The chip represents a major upgrade in Microsoft's in-house AI accelerator roadmap, as the company seeks to strengthen its competitiveness in the AI infrastructure space.

However, market adoption of Microsoft's current-generation in-house AI chip, Maia 200, has been relatively slow. Although Microsoft has previously invested significant resources in developing dedicated AI chips to meet the growing AI computing demands of its Azure cloud platform, customer migration and large-scale deployment still face challenges.

As demand for generative AI continues to grow, cloud service providers are accelerating the development of in-house chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia's GPU supply chain. Beyond Microsoft, cloud computing giants such as Google and Amazon have also launched their own in-house AI chip solutions.

Industry insiders believe that if Microsoft can improve the performance and supply capacity of its Maia series chips and attract adoption by external customers, it will help strengthen the competitiveness of Azure's AI infrastructure and lower the cost of AI computing power. (The Information)
