Analysis: Behind SK Hynix's $38 Billion Capacity Expansion, the Biggest Driver Is Nvidia

2026-08-09 10:45

Odaily News: SK Hynix's board has approved an investment plan of approximately 54.3 trillion Korean won (about $38 billion) to expand DRAM and NAND production capacity in South Korea. The biggest driver behind this plan is Nvidia. Currently, Nvidia's high-end AI GPUs rely heavily on HBM to enhance data transfer capabilities, and SK Hynix is one of the major suppliers in this field. Critics argue that instead of opting for more prudent diversified investments, SK Hynix is directly betting its future on Nvidia's AI hardware—a gamble that leaves little room for maneuver if AI demand cools down. However, SK Hynix's bet is premised on the belief that this cycle is different from previous ones: AI infrastructure spending is structural rather than a temporary surge. By expanding HBM capacity, the company aims to lock in long-term demand generated by Nvidia's AI ecosystem. (The Street)
