国家税务总局:对境外保险收益征税并非新政策,市场无需过度解读

Odaily News: Recently, reports have surfaced that income from insurance policies purchased in Hong Kong by mainland Chinese tax residents has been included in the taxable scope, drawing public attention.

In response, on August 7, reporters contacted the State Taxation Administration for an interview. A relevant department head from the administration stated that, according to China's Individual Income Tax Law, Chinese tax residents are obligated to pay taxes on their global income, and income from overseas insurance policies also falls within the scope of taxable income. This is not a new policy, nor is it specifically targeted at the Hong Kong insurance market, so there is no need for excessive interpretation.

The official explained that residents are required to pay individual income tax on income derived from overseas sources, including insurance gains, in accordance with the law—a common international practice and a fundamental principle upheld since the implementation of China's Individual Income Tax Law. In recent years, tax authorities have been conducting policy guidance and reminder notifications based on this principle and relevant regulations. (The Beijing News)
