Even during periods when banks were robbed weekly, people still stored their gold there, because a home safe without professional expertise does not equal security—it is merely a chest with a label. Even if everyone learned self-custody, self-custody would not necessarily prevail. When problems arise, people need someone to hold accountable, and self-custody cannot provide that, which is also why not everyone uses DEXs. Self-custody is not the safest option; the safest option is the one users can actually handle.
