Analysis: Short positions in U.S. stocks rise to high levels; S&P 500 short ratio approaches highest since 2010

Odaily reported that The Kobeissi Letter posted on X platform, stating that data shows short positions in U.S. stocks continue to increase. Currently, the short interest ratio for S&P 500 constituent stocks has risen to approximately 3.7% of float, approaching the highest level since 2010; the short interest ratio for Russell 3000 constituent stocks has risen to approximately 6.1%, also near historical highs.

Both indicators have been on the rise since the beginning of 2025. Additionally, the short interest ratio for all listed stocks on the New York Stock Exchange reached 9.0% in late June, setting a new all-time high. For comparison, this indicator peaked at around 5.0% during the 2008 financial crisis and approximately 6.0% during the 2020 pandemic period.
