Anthropic Book Copyright Class Action Reaches $1.5 Billion Settlement, Setting a Record for US AI Copyright Cases

Odaily Planet Daily News The two-year-long Anthropic book copyright class action has officially concluded, with a US federal judge approving a $1.5 billion settlement, setting a new record for the amount of known copyright settlements in the United States.

Earlier, the court determined that Anthropic's use of books to train the Claude model constituted fair use, but its act of downloading and storing over 7 million pirated books still constitutes copyright infringement.

Currently, over 91% of the relevant authors and publishers have applied for compensation. Some rights holders have opted out of the settlement and will continue to pursue action against Anthropic in other lawsuits. This case also marks the first major AI training copyright case in the US to complete the processes of trial, ruling, and settlement.
