G42 removed $150 million worth of Huawei equipment, can purchase Nvidia's core products without restrictions for the next 9 months

2026-07-19 21:26

Odaily reported that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) previously deployed veteran agent Johnny Gannon to Abu Dhabi, UAE, to continuously supervise and manage G42, a core AI enterprise in the UAE, pushing it to sever technical ties with Chinese companies.

The US government had previously expressed concerns that if advanced US AI semiconductors, such as those from Nvidia, were provided to G42, related core technologies might flow to China. Subsequently, G42 dismantled Huawei equipment valued at $150 million, introduced external auditors, and accepted the rectification requirements put forward by the US.

At the end of the Biden administration, the US approved conditional AI chip exports to the UAE. After the Trump administration took office, the "Stargate UAE" AI infrastructure project, involving OpenAI and Nvidia, advanced, and the US Department of Commerce recently significantly relaxed export controls on AI semiconductors to the UAE.

As a result, G42 can purchase Nvidia's core products without restrictions for the next 9 months. Some individuals have raised conflict of interest issues regarding pledges by parties associated with UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan to invest in businesses linked to the Trump family, but the White House has denied these claims.
