Colombian President Gustavo Petro has stated that Caribbean coastal cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha could leverage surplus renewable energy to become Bitcoin mining hubs. Petro proposed involving the largest local indigenous community, the Wayúu, in shared ownership of the project, and believes this move will significantly boost development in the Caribbean region. Currently, approximately 75% of Colombia's electricity comes from renewable sources. The plan aims to emulate Paraguay's model of attracting miners with cheap, clean energy. As U.S. miners shift towards the AI computing sector, Colombia hopes to fill the global gap in computing power share by offering idle electricity.
