Saudi Arabia Urges U.S. to Lift Blockade on Strait of Hormuz
Odaily News Saudi Arabia is pressuring the United States to abandon its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table. Saudi Arabia is concerned that U.S. President Trump's move to blockade the strait could provoke retaliatory action from Iran, potentially leading to the closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a crucial passageway to the Red Sea and is vital for Saudi Arabia's daily oil exports of approximately 7 million barrels.
Previously, Iran's attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz disrupted about 13 million barrels of daily oil exports, pushing oil prices above $100. Trump imposed a blockade on Iranian ports on Monday. Arab officials stated that Iran is pressuring Yemen's Houthi rebels to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Saudi energy officials indicated that Saudi Arabia had previously secured a commitment from the Houthis not to attack its vessels, but the current situation remains uncertain. (WSJ)
