Korea Exchange Chairman Renews Call for Cryptocurrency ETF Listing to Boost Market

2025-02-10 04:43

Odaily News Jung Eun-bo, chairman of the Korea Exchange, has once again called for the listing of cryptocurrency ETFs in South Korea, stressing the need to keep pace with global financial markets. "South Korea ranks third in the world in terms of real cryptocurrency trading volume," he said in a recent interview in Seoul. "Cryptocurrency is an area that can create new value in the financial industry." He added: "The United States has listed cryptocurrency futures and spot ETFs and trading is active. We need to allow cryptocurrency ETFs to be traded immediately."
His remarks come as South Korea's stock market faces structural problems such as a declining investor base and excessive spin-offs and "zombie companies." He made it clear that strengthening market supervision and improving transparency are top priorities, and the broader strategy includes promoting corporate value enhancement plans, protecting minority shareholders and accelerating the delisting of non-viable companies.

Regarding cryptocurrency ETFs, he believes that their launch will increase the depth of financial markets and provide investors with more regulated digital asset investment options.
