2024-09-10 00:25
Odaily News The U.S. House of Representatives announced on September 9 local time that it passed HR8333, the Biosecure Act, by 306 votes to 81. The bill restricts U.S. federal agencies from doing business with foreign biotechnology companies on the grounds of "national security" and names five Chinese companies, namely, China's contract research organization (CRO) giant WuXi AppTec, its sister company WuXi Biologics, BGI Group, BGI-affiliated company BGI Intelligence, and BGI subsidiary Complete Genomics. These Chinese companies have denied that they pose any security threat to the United States. According to the relevant legislative procedures in the United States, before the bill officially becomes law, it needs to be voted on and passed by the plenary sessions of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and the versions passed by the two houses must be reconciled and finally submitted to the President of the United States for signature.
