The Odaily Planet Daily reports that Alphabet, Google's parent company, has announced a major leadership reshuffle within its artificial intelligence division. Demis Hassabis, the head of AI, has stepped down from his primary management role, while several Gemini model leaders, including senior engineer Jeff Dean, have also departed one after another. This personnel change comes at a critical moment for Google DeepMind: the flagship version of its latest Gemini model, originally scheduled for release in June, has still not been unveiled, raising concerns among investors and the industry that Google is falling behind its competitors Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which have each poached a star AI employee from Google this summer.

Hassabis will take on the newly established role of chief scientist at Alphabet and transition from CEO of Google DeepMind to chairman. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the division's chief technology officer, will take over day-to-day management, serving as senior vice president of the business unit while continuing to hold the title of chief AI architect at Alphabet.
