Iranian sources say Iran insists on retaining control of the Strait of Hormuz

2026-07-01 09:41

Odaily Planet Daily reports According to two high-level Iranian sources, Iran is determined to secure international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and the right to charge fees for vessels entering and leaving the Gulf, even if it requires the use of force. Under a provisional agreement reached with the United States this month aimed at ending their three-month conflict, Iran agreed to allow free passage for vessels through the strait within 60 days. However, Iran believes the wording of the agreement allows it to continue controlling which vessels can pass through and the navigation routes of these vessels within this narrow waterway.

The sources stated that Iran is also determined to ensure long-term formal recognition of this control after the provisional agreement expires; until a consensus is reached on this issue, its negotiators will not shift to other controversial topics in peace talks with Washington. (Jinshi)
