Tokenized markets remain small and fragmented; IMF recommends clarifying the regulatory framework and strengthening interoperability
Odaily reports that the IMF stated in a publication that tokenized repurchase agreements have an average daily trading volume of approximately 300–350 billion USD, while other tokenized assets amount to approximately 65 billion USD, compared with the U.S. repo market's average daily size of approximately 13 trillion USD and global capital market assets totaling 300 trillion USD. The IMF stated that although the tokenized market is growing rapidly, it remains relatively small and highly fragmented; to achieve safe growth, legal certainty must be established, the regulatory framework must be clarified, and interoperability must be achieved. The IMF also warned that an expansion in market size could amplify traditional financial risks such as sell-offs, liquidity runs, and contagion, and that policymakers should clarify the legal rights of tokenized assets, ensure consistent regulation applies to similar activities, and continuously monitor interconnectedness, leverage, and liquidity risks.
