美参议员沃伦称特朗普政府改革CFPB导致消费者损失265亿美元

2026-07-16 14:10

Odaily Planet Daily News: U.S. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren released a report stating that the Trump administration's reforms to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) may have resulted in up to $26.5 billion in additional costs for American consumers.

Warren stated that approximately $22.5 billion of this amount stems from the CFPB's rescission of policies capping credit card late fees and bank overdraft fees, while the remaining roughly $4 billion is attributed to the agency's abandonment of certain enforcement actions and consumer restitution agreements.

The report indicates that the CFPB's previous rule limiting credit card late fees would have capped most late charges at $8, projected to save consumers about $10 billion annually. Meanwhile, an earlier proposed rule on overdraft fees sought to push banks to limit certain overdraft charges to $5 or less.

It is reported that Trump implemented a sweeping overhaul of the CFPB, including staffing cuts, suspending or scaling back multiple enforcement actions, and rescinding several consumer protection rules enacted during the Biden era. Warren criticized that these reforms have weakened the CFPB's role as a consumer financial regulator, exposing consumers to greater unfair fees and financial risks. The CFPB and the White House have not yet responded immediately to the allegations in Warren's report. (CNBC)
