Iranian sources say Iran insists on retaining control over the Strait of Hormuz
Odaily reported that according to two senior Iranian sources, Iran is determined to secure international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and its right to charge fees to ships entering and exiting the Gulf, even if it requires the use of force. Under a provisional agreement reached with the United States this month aimed at ending three months of bilateral conflict, Iran agreed to allow ships free passage through the strait for 60 days. However, Iran believes that the wording of the agreement allows it to continue controlling which ships may pass and the navigation routes of these vessels within this narrow waterway.
The sources stated that Iran is also determined to secure long-term formal recognition of this control after the provisional agreement expires; until a consensus is reached on this issue, its negotiators will not turn to other disputed topics during peace talks with Washington. (Jinshi)
