Zuckerberg Admits "Missteps in Workforce Adjustment" During AI Transformation, Meta's Internal AI Restructuring Continues to Advance

2026-06-14 06:02

According to internal memos and media reports, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees that the company has "made some mistakes" during its AI-driven organizational transformation and expects similar situations may arise in the future.

Zuckerberg pointed out that Meta is investing hundreds of billions of dollars into the AI field to reshape its core business structure. However, the rapid evolution of AI technology has brought significant organizational challenges, leading to missteps in some personnel adjustments and organizational restructuring. He emphasized that the company will strive to provide greater organizational stability going forward and does not anticipate large-scale layoffs this year.

During the current restructuring cycle, Meta made significant adjustments in May, including a global layoff of approximately 10% and the reassignment of about 7,000 employees to AI-related projects. Zuckerberg stated that some affected employees will be reassigned to roles related to model training and AI workflows to reduce organizational disruption. He also mentioned that the company will increase investment in team building, including boosting budgets for external meetings and collaborations, and plans to hold a large-scale hackathon in July to promote collaborative development on AI projects.

Additionally, Meta has noticed issues stemming from the expansion of management responsibilities and plans to streamline its management hierarchy. Notably, the newly formed Applied AI Engineering department is reported to have adopted a highly flat structure, with employee-to-manager ratios reaching as high as 50:1 in some teams. Meta has not provided further comment on this internal memo. (Reuters)
