US media: Musk's Grok is losing ground in the AI race
Odaily reported that Musk's AI model, Grok, is falling far behind its fast-growing competitors. Meanwhile, a massive computing power lease agreement between his company SpaceX and Anthropic has also raised external questions: whether Grok still has a chance to catch up with the industry leaders.
Since its launch two years ago, Grok has attracted millions of users by integrating with Musk's social platform X and offering controversial features such as "AI companions." However, the latest data suggests its growth momentum appears to have stalled. According to data from analytics firm AppMagic, Grok's downloads dropped to approximately 8.3 million in April this year, compared to over 20 million in January this year.
A survey conducted by research firm Recon Analytics, covering over 260,000 AI users and professionals in the United States, shows that in the second quarter of 2026, the proportion of respondents willing to pay for Grok remained essentially flat at 0.174%, compared to 0.173% a year ago. In contrast, over 6% of respondents stated they have paid for ChatGPT. (Jin Shi)
