Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have published a study on the privacy of Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC), arguably the two most popular cryptos designed to provide anonymity to users. Sexual encrypted assets.
The report found that Monero has introduced strict security and anonymity requirements within its wider ecosystem, keeping Monero "virtually untraceable."
Horizontally, the report concluded that while ZEC offers “strong encryption,” more than 99 percent of users are not taking full advantage of Zcash’s privacy, undermining privacy across the network.

Zcash user behavior undermines privacy
The report describes Zcash as a Bitcoin (BTC) fork that aims to "clearly sever the link between sender and receiver."
By using zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive proofs of knowledge (SNARKs), ZEC is able to prevent any interaction between transaction provers and verifiers, creating a “further barrier to efforts to link addresses together.”
However, Zcash offers anonymously shielded and anonymously transparent transactions, and the researchers found that only 0.09% of ZEC transactions over a 30-day period took full advantage of the protocol’s privacy.
“Although Zcash is cryptographically well rooted, users don’t behave in a way that takes full advantage of isolated pools such that they can be traced. When every user in an isolated pool is linked to a transparent pool, the ZEC ecology The overall anonymity of the system decreases as the anonymity set is drastically reduced."
The study found: “It appears that the majority of Zcash users have not yet understood how Zcash operates, and concluded that ZEC users utilizing shielded transactions are “extremely small,” making Zcash “effectively traceable.”

30% of XMR transactions found to be traceable
The report noted that a growing number of altcoins are trying to market themselves as privacy coins, claiming that it offers completely private transactions compared to almost all cryptoassets that enable anonymous transactions.
