Coinbase accelerates efforts to quantum-proof Bitcoin: multi-party discussions on future asset migration plans
Odaily Planet Daily News: Coinbase announced that it has co-hosted a closed-door "Post-Quantum Bitcoin Workshop" at Stanford University, together with Stanford cryptography professor Dan Boneh and Localhost Research. The workshop brought together Bitcoin developers, cryptography experts, researchers, institutional custodians, and hardware wallet specialists to discuss technical and migration strategies for Bitcoin to address future quantum computing threats.
The workshop focused on assessing the progress of quantum computing development, post-quantum cryptography, and different post-quantum signature schemes applicable to Bitcoin. Discussions also covered Ethereum's quantum-resistance roadmap, the practical requirements of institutional custody operations, and how to introduce post-quantum security mechanisms to Bitcoin through mechanisms such as new output types. Participants argued that rather than predicting when quantum computing will pose an actual threat to existing cryptographic systems, it is more important to establish thoroughly tested countermeasures in advance. Quantum computing does not currently present an imminent crisis, but the earlier research and coordination begin, the better positioned the ecosystem will be to avoid hasty network upgrades and asset migrations under pressure in the future.
However, no single post-quantum solution has yet achieved consensus. Different proposals involve trade-offs in security, transaction data size, hardware performance, key management, and the difficulty of user migration. Participants agreed that quantum-proofing Bitcoin cannot rely solely on protocol-layer upgrades; it must also take into account how individual users, institutional custodians, wallets, and hardware devices generate, store, back up, and migrate keys and assets.
