Germany Plans to Abolish Tax Exemption for Bitcoin and Other Crypto Assets Purchased After 2027 Based on Long-Term Holding

2026-09-08 16:45

According to Odaily Planet Daily, Bitcoin News reported on Platform X that, per WELT, the German Ministry of Finance is drafting a tax reform proposal that would impose taxes on gains from Bitcoin and other crypto assets purchased after December 31, 2026, eliminating the exemption based on holding period. Existing holdings would still be subject to current rules, meaning they can be sold tax-free after being held for more than one year. The relevant law is scheduled to take effect in 2027, with the first tax withholding potentially beginning in 2028. The draft is still in its early stages and may be subject to adjustments.
