Samsung Electronics plans to build 4 new semiconductor wafer factories in South Korea by 2030

Odaily Planet Daily News: Samsung Electronics, a South Korean semiconductor company, is refining its investment plan for a large-scale semiconductor production base in South Korea. It plans to build 4 new wafer factories by 2030 and has shared the related plans with its key partners.

Samsung Electronics plans to construct P5 and P6 in Pyeongtaek, one wafer factory in the Namsa-eup semiconductor cluster in Yongin City, and one new wafer factory in Gwangju. SK Hynix is expected to build Y1 and Y2 in the Wonsam-myeon semiconductor cluster in Yongin and one new wafer factory in Gwangju. The total number of new wafer factories built by the two companies from this year to 2030 will reach 7.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix announced a semiconductor equipment investment roadmap totaling 3200 trillion KRW on the 29th of last month, which does not include investment costs for AI data centers. Samsung Electronics has moved up the completion target for the Yongin wafer factory from 2047 to 2040, while SK Hynix has moved it forward from 2045 to 2033.

An industry insider in the semiconductor equipment sector stated that Samsung Electronics recently asked partners if they were interested in making additional local investments, based on the premise of building a wafer factory in Gwangju by 2030. However, considering the current production capacity and Gwangju's infrastructure, the feasibility is still difficult to confirm.
