Billionaire Dan Loeb Dismisses AI Bubble Concerns: AI Is Just Getting Started, Massive Capital Expenditure Will Pay Off

2026-05-30 13:56

Odaily Star Daily News Billionaire investor and founder of hedge fund Third Point, Dan Loeb, stated in a podcast that current market concerns over an artificial intelligence (AI) "bubble" are significantly exaggerated, emphasizing that the development phase of the AI industry is completely different from the internet bubble era.

Loeb pointed out that tech giants including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have combined capital expenditures exceeding $700 billion this year, potentially reaching $1 trillion next year, with the vast majority allocated to AI infrastructure construction. He stated that not believing these capital expenditures can generate returns is equivalent to thinking companies are "burning cash for nothing." However, these companies currently have strong profitability and ample cash flow, enabling them to support investments through their own balance sheets.

Loeb emphasized that this differs from the "valuation disconnected from fundamentals" scenario of the internet bubble era and does not constitute a traditional valuation bubble. He also mentioned that AI companies like Anthropic are experiencing rapid revenue growth and accelerating product application deployment, indicating the industry is still in its early expansion phase.

According to reports, Anthropic's latest funding round valuation is approaching $965 billion, with annualized revenue surging from $14 billion to $47 billion, further strengthening market confidence in AI's commercialization potential.

However, some investors in the market, including Michael Burry, have expressed concerns about overheated AI valuations, suggesting that massive investments may struggle to generate corresponding returns. Loeb countered, "We haven't even scratched the surface of AI development," and believes the current stage remains the early phase of long-term growth. (BusinessInsider)
