US officials: US and Iran reach agreement on memorandum of understanding, but still needs Trump's final approval

2026-05-28 14:18

Odaily Planet Daily News According to two US officials who spoke to Axios, US and Iranian negotiators have reached an agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and initiating negotiations on Iran's nuclear program; however, Trump has not yet given final approval. Signing the memorandum of understanding would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the outbreak of the war, but further intensive negotiations are still required to reach a final agreement addressing Trump's nuclear demands.

US officials stated that this 60-day memorandum of understanding will stipulate that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be "unrestricted." One US official said this means no tolls will be charged and no harassment will occur, and Iran must clear all mines in the strait within 30 days. (Jin Shi)
