In the gradually recovering crypto market, BIO, once hailed as the "Star of the DeSci Track," has also delivered an impressive report card: its price briefly broke through $0.066 on May 3, achieving a doubling in value within just 3 days. Now, nearly a year and a half after the DeSci (Decentralized Science) hype around the end of 2024, Bio Protocol, once bearing the glamour of a "Binance Launchpool project," has adapted to the AI era by proclaiming the slogan "Agent Pays for Science." Whether this represents a revival of an old project or a pump-and-dump scheme will likely become clear soon.
Bio Protocol's Old and New Narratives: From DeSci to Agentic DeSci
Analyzing the reasons behind BIO's price increase, the most significant factor, in my view, is its alignment with a new narrative for the AI era — shifting from decentralized science research to AI Agent and agent-driven decentralized science research.
This is not only a further refinement of market positioning but also a crucial step in injecting new vitality into the Bio Protocol ecosystem. Specifically, Bio Protocol's key actions are as follows:
- BioXP System: Built upon the Bio Protocol V2 staking system, the BioXP system allows for priority participation in Ignition Sales (token launch fundraising), increased allocation quotas, and accumulation of veBIO (governance votes). This serves as the foundational framework for the long-term development of the ecosystem.
- Funding Support: In September last year, Bio Protocol completed a $6.9 million seed round led by Arthur Hayes' Maelstrom Fund, with participation from Mechanism Capital, Animoca Brands, Presto Labs, and others, aimed at advancing its AI-driven Launchpad and BioAgents. It had previously also received investment from Yzi Labs (formerly Binance Labs). Sufficient funding is a necessary guarantee for sustained development across bull and bear market cycles.
- BioAgent Launchpad: This Launchpad platform, built in conjunction with the BioAgents platform, focuses on the concept of "allowing anyone to deploy DeSci AI Agents." The latest token sale project,PeptAI, launched on May 1 and was oversubscribed by 5.9 times in under 30 minutes. As of May 4, it was oversubscribed by 12.7 times ($633,000, with the token's initial FDV calculated at $1 million and a token price of $0.1). Currently, over 700 participants are involved, and the sale lasts for 14 days, ending on May 14 at 9 PM. Regarding token distribution: 20% of the total PEPTAI supply will be airdropped to BIO stakers (veBIO holders, with a 6-month linear vesting); 5% is allocated for the public Ignition Sale; those without BioXP can participate by minting or staking BIO. Thus, through the Launchpad sale mechanism, Bio Protocol has created a positive flywheel: "Stake BIO tokens → Earn BioXP points → Participate in project token sales → Engage in community governance."
According to official data, the Bio ecosystem has now raised over $50 million, with a community size of approximately 90,000 members.
Driven by this new flywheel effect, the BIO token continued its upward momentum, surging from around $0.03 to $0.066 within just three days, before retreating to around $0.06.
Of course, narrative updates and project iterations are one aspect; on the other hand, whether the Bio Protocol team is actively market-making or engaging in a pump-and-dump strategy is another key focus for the market.
Pump-and-Dump or Active Market Making? Perspectives on Bio Protocol Team's Ambitions
On the morning of May 3, according to monitoring by crypto analyst Ai Yi (@ai_9684xtpa), BIO rose 118% over the past week. On the same day, a multi-sig address associated with the Bio Protocol team transferred 120 million BIO to three addresses, with approximately 80 million BIO (worth about $5.031 million) moved to OKX and Binance.
On another note, Binance previously announced that it would add the BIO/U trading pair to its isolated margin platform on April 28, 2026, at 16:00 (UTC+8), providing additional fuel for BIO's price rally through margin trading.
Currently, BIO's market capitalization stands at approximately $127 million, still a significant distance from its peak of around $1.1 billion in early 2025. Furthermore, the team's recent transfer did not cause significant volatility in BIO's price. Combined with the broader crypto market recovery pushing Bitcoin above $80,000, BIO's price may continue to rise.
More importantly, the latest token sale project from the Bio Protocol ecosystem, PEPTAI, has entered the wet lab experimentation phase. Operating on a model of "autonomous AI Agent decision-making + on-chain information transparency," it pushes the DeSci track—previously more focused on proof-of-concept—towards a tangible business stage, creating a "replicable drug discovery assembly line."
From this perspective, the ambitions of the Bio Protocol team have never been small. After all, they are targeting a multi-trillion-dollar healthcare market.
Of course, considering the niche nature and regulatory barriers of the DeSci track, the short-term price trajectory of BIO for the remainder of the year remains highly dependent on speculative narrative-driven hype.
