Loss of over 4.5 million Hong Kong dollars: Hong Kong woman in her sixties defrauded by fake tenant in cryptocurrency investment scam
Odaily report: Hong Kong police stated that over the past week, more than 50 investment fraud cases were received, involving losses exceeding 30 million Hong Kong dollars. Among them, a retired woman in her sixties earlier met a man claiming to be interested in renting a property on a real estate transaction platform. The man claimed to be an investment expert and persuaded her to invest in cryptocurrency, providing a fake investment website. The woman purchased USDT 20 times at physical cryptocurrency exchange shops and transferred it to a wallet designated by the man for "buying ETH." Initially, she was able to withdraw some funds; later, when she applied for withdrawal, the man demanded she first pay USDT equivalent to approximately 7 million Hong Kong dollars as "tax," and she then realized she had been scammed, ultimately losing over 4.5 million Hong Kong dollars.
