US media: Trump tightens terms of Iran agreement, revisions submitted to Iran

2026-05-31 00:33

Odaily Planet Daily News According to the New York Times, three officials have revealed that US President Donald Trump has tightened the terms of a potential framework agreement aimed at ending the war in Iran and sent the revised proposals back to Iran for consideration. It is currently unclear what specific changes Trump has made to the text of the agreement.

Two officials stated that Trump is concerned about the part of the potential agreement involving the unfreezing of Iranian funds. He has been highly critical of former President Barack Obama's similar approach in the agreement signed over a decade ago to curb Iran's nuclear program. One official noted that Trump is also frustrated by Iran's delayed response to the US proposals. These proposals were formed through repeated consultations with the involvement of intermediaries, including Pakistan.

The official added that Trump's proposed revisions—constituting a stricter new proposal—may be intended to accelerate the process by pressuring Iran, prompting it to accept the framework agreement that has already been submitted to its Supreme Leader, Mujtaba, for approval. (Jin Shi)
