Adeniyi Abodiun co-founded Sui Blockchain and Mysten Labs with Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, George Danezis, and Kostas Chalkias, and currently serves as the co-founder and Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Mysten Labs, the Sui development team. Adeniyi Abiodun started out as a software engineer in London. In 2012, he established his first encryption infrastructure business and has since held leadership roles at Oracle, VMWare, and Meta.

During the Sui Builder House in Denver, Wayne Cunningham, technical content manager of the Sui Foundation, and Adeniyi Abiodun conducted an AMA event, where the community and users could gain insight into the internal situation of the Mysten Labs team, two testnet results, favorite product use cases and Adeniyi's expectations for the mainnet launch.

Wayne Cunningham: Adeniyi, what is your role as chief product officer of Mysten Labs and co-founder of Sui?

Adeniyi Abiodun:At Mysten Labs, we're building the foundation of a decentralized web that gives everyone safe, fast, and low-cost access to digital assets.

On top of that, I'm also responsible for helping the company realize that vision, making sure we're measuring the right things and setting the right goals to take meaningful steps. We are a team that excels in economics, product, marketing, design and engineering. While spanning many verticals, our day-to-day focus is on uniting the team around a common goal, ensuring we're building a tailored product for developers trying to break into the Sui platform. In our opinion, Sui is the next generation blockchain that actually brings so-called broadband to Web3.

Wayne Cunningham: You mentioned measuring the right thing, so what is the measurement?

Adeniyi Abiodun:What we really care about is that developers can build applications on a platform that really benefits them. First, can they attract enough of their target audience? Second, can they build highly secure and trusted applications?

This is exactly the advantage of decentralized technology. It lets you build strong communities, adopt new monetization strategies, build code on public shared infrastructure, and do so in a highly scalable manner. We believe that developers can form the largest community on the Sui platform because we can support the largest user base of any Layer 1 blockchain.

Wayne Cunningham: Mysten Labs, the Move language, and the Sui blockchain all came out of your work at Meta with Evan, Sam, Kostas, and George. Can you describe what it was like to work with them? And how did you get here step by step?

Adeniyi Abiodun:We didn't realize that dream at Facebook, but we believe we've built a great team that can help the company achieve most of its goals from a technical standpoint. In fact, this goal has no chance of success. So we think the best way to achieve that vision is to really build a fully decentralized infrastructure rather than building something inside Facebook.

It has been a great experience working with Sam, Geore, Kostas and Evan. They're great, and there's nothing better than starting a company with your friends.

Wayne Cunningham: They all have excellent resumes, Sam invented Move, Kostas is an excellent cryptographer, George is an expert in privacy technology and distributed systems, and Evan has a great blockchain vision. So, do they complement each other well?

Adeniyi Abiodun:We are complementary. I have a strong technical background in product, but not far behind the rest of the team. CEO Evan is an expert and pioneer in compilers, he has a great vision and a strong product. We also have Sam, George and Kostas who invented the Move programming language, and they are all experts in different fields. I think that's what separates Mysten Labs from Sui. We have experts in programming languages, cryptography and distributed systems, and we have built teams that operate efficiently. All of these are needed to really solve the problem to build the most scalable blockchain ever. There are some strong teams that may not have benefited from that, and that actually shapes our success now.

Wayne Cunningham: Your product focus seems to be on the utility and users of the web, so how did you create that vision for a web that is still in development?

Adeniyi Abiodun:Obsession with this question. I'm obsessed with creating something that really fits the user base, and our user base is developers. We are focused on creating the best platform for developers to build on. That's why we spend a lot of time getting there because we just keep iterating and making it better. The tools have to be better, the programming experience has to be better, the build experience has to be better, and the developer's use of the platform has to be better.

So my job is really to make deep technical concepts and components better understood by new and experienced developers. Our team is making it happen.

Wayne Cunningham: Can you introduce the inside story of the two testnets so far, Wave 1 and Wave 2?

Adeniyi Abiodun:Both testnets have successfully concluded. It looks like everything is working well, but the team has done a lot of work behind the scenes. When a certain date or deadline comes around, the whole team comes together. The first testnet is about validators, can we get this network running with validators allowing them to run clients instead of us running them for the past six months?

The second testnet is about token economics. We build tokens directly on the blockchain, and the way blockchain works in tokenomics is merge and fuse. We have a lot to prove because it's a big bet and we think we can prove a lot in Wave 2. The next Wave 3 will be developer-centric.

Wayne Cunningham: Are there any surprises in token economics during the run of testnet Wave 2?

Adeniyi Abiodun:From a consumer perspective, what is dissatisfying about Web3 is that Gas prices are unpredictable. We cannot build systems that can be adopted at scale if gas fees are volatile. We have designed an element in token economics that gas fees should be as flat as possible even under conditions of high volatility and network congestion. Wave 2 has proven this.

Wayne Cunningham: Is this a very different model than the cloud model where you have to add servers to keep up with the traffic?

Adeniyi Abiodun:It's actually a bit similar. Most blockchains cannot add more resources to the network, they have a fixed capacity, and the best way to insure against network congestion is to increase transaction prices so that the highest bidder can basically be processed all the time. It's a way to control network congestion, but it's a poor model. In fact, the cloud model doesn't work that way, and Google isn't going to increase my bill for just rolling out 50 separate apps. What they did was throw in more servers to solve this problem. The same is true of Sui's design, that is, as the network becomes congested, validators will not increase the gas fee, but can simply invest more resources to maintain a balance between resource supply and demand.

Wayne Cunningham: What do you expect the mainnet to look like when it launches? Will there be a smooth transition from Testnet Wave 3, or will there be something radically different?

Adeniyi Abiodun:We will not launch a blockchain that is low-performing, insecure, and lacks all the features we want to provide to developers. The mainnet will be feature-rich, and the only thing left to do after launch is to add additional scalability and additional developer improvements to the network.

On the first day after the mainnet goes live, users will be able to use the app, play Sui Capys, and trade on DEXs and central limit order books. Users are able to do everything on a traditional blockchain, but the difference is that we have applications that create more engagement than traditional blockchains.

NFTs on Sui are dynamic, and they will provide more user engagement, and these types of user engagement will facilitate people to build more interesting communities in new ways.

Wayne Cunningham: What are some of your favorite use cases for apps on Sui?

Adeniyi Abiodun:Gaming is one of our favorites. We think games are already well integrated with digital asset ownership, including liberating those assets now on the public ledger, allowing people to freely build composability aspects on Sui. This is very unique because it is fully composable, which is not possible with other blockchains. This will facilitate a new wave of previously unimaginable collaborations.

Wayne Cunningham: Do you expect a richer game environment, such as being able to experience it on a game console? Do you expect to see this type of evolution on the blockchain?

Adeniyi Abiodun:We've announced partnerships with some of the world's leading game studios, experts in creating AAA games. We believe that games must first and foremost be fun, which is why we work with experienced game makers. We will be publishing extensive coverage of specific gaming applications that will be launched on the Sui mainnet.

Wayne Cunningham: In the long run, is Mysten Labs going to focus on building the Sui blockchain, or is it going to develop its own applications and build the user experience?

Adeniyi Abiodun:Our goal is to provide continuous service to developers, and this is what we do, which is the key to Sui's success. It has been incorporated into the Sui Foundation, allowing it to develop independently of Mysten Labs.
