Conversation with Vitalik: zk-STARK will be as important as the blockchain in 10 years
Immediately after Taipei Blockchain Week, NFT Taipei was grandly launched in Sanchuang Life Park today. In the first program of the event, Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, and Suji Yan, founder of Mask Network, were invited to have a fireside chat, talking about zero-knowledge proof (ZK) technology, the FTX event, and the future development of Ethereum.
Optimistic about zk-STARK technology
In the conversation, Vitalik said that zk-STARK technology will become as important as the blockchain in the next 10-20 years. As a powerful privacy technology, it can not only solve the problems of blockchain applications, but also serve as a central Better security for users of the optimized system.
Although the blockchain has characteristics such as openness, anti-censorship and compliance with the rules set by the developers, the blockchain also sacrifices scalability and privacy. However, with zk-STARK technology, both of these deficiencies can be taken care of.
Regarding how zk-STARK solves the problem of privacy, Vitalik said that it depends on the application, and each application is different. However, in terms of scalability, with the continuous development of zk-EVM technology, the verification of transactions is no longer limited to Ethereum blocks, which will help to improve scalability.
How to reduce gas costs
Although the Gas fee on Ethereum is much lower than it was a year ago, it is still a burden for many people. Vitalik said that this is a "scalability" problem. After The Merge, Ethereum entered the stage of The Surge, aiming to improve the scalability of the entire Ethereum network through Layer 2.
Vitalik believes that the Layer 2 team will attract more attention next year, whether it is the progress of zk-EVM or Optimistic Rollup, it will help to further reduce Gas costs.
Views on FTX Events
Regarding the phenomenon of many FTX victims in Taiwan, Vitalik said that things that can be successful in the encryption industry must be practical and remain true to the value of cryptocurrencies. Although some people believe that centralization is better and more efficient, decentralization exists only to avoid regulation. But in the FTX incident, it can be seen that it did not take into account the protection of users, while keeping the system open and transparent so that users are not deceived.
"The failure of FTX burned countless users' assets, but Uniswap has been operating perfectly for four years, and MakerDao has also operated quite well in the past four years." Vitalik said.
However, Vitalik also mentioned that many people in Latin America use Binance because of practical needs. They use Binance for instant transfers and don’t need to worry about losing their wallets (because centralized exchanges can help customers solve problems through the recovery process) . But instead of handing over to centralized exchanges or relying on hardware wallets, Vitalik prefers to use "social recovery wallets" to keep wallets safe and decentralized.
Note: The social recovery wallet can add a trusted object or device as a guardian. When the person loses control of the wallet, the guardian can help restore control by signing a special transaction.
