The NFT basic book "How to NFT" is serialized.

Collectibles have always been a unique asset class. People collect all sorts of things like seashells, stamps, cards, fridge magnets, etc. as a hobby or even to show off.

Most of the time, the value of such collectibles is highly speculative. For example, Pokémon trading cards have continued to rise in value since their craze in the late 90s.An unopened box of Pokémon cards soared from $100 to $50,000 in Q1 2021

CryptoPunks

Looking at it now, the CryptoPunks project has a long and illustrious history. In 2017, John Watkinson and Matt Hall co-created (both later founded Larva Labs) to issue 10,000 CryptoPunks, all avatars are randomly generated by the program, and they are free to claim (the claimant only needs to pay a small amount of Ethereum minting gas fee).

Attributes are randomly generated, some are rare. For example some are aliens (only 9 such CryptoPunks) and apes (only 24 such CryptoPunks), while most are normal humanoids.

Although CryptoPunk was one of the earliest NFT projects on Ethereum (even months before CryptoKitties), there was very little market activity for CryptoPunks in the early days. According to Hall, fewer than 30 CryptoPunks were claimed in the days after the project launched. Over time, as more and more people became aware of the project, especiallyMashable's article recommendation guide, all CryptoPunks are eventually minted.

The community is small but passionate. Slowly, CryptoPunk holders regard it as a status symbol. For any collectibles market, evidence represents value, and blockchain is no exception. Members holding a CryptoPunk convey two things - you are either an NFT/Ethereum OG or gain value from being part of history.

However, attention will only turn to CryptoPunks when celebrities, venture capitalists, and business people start snapping up CryptoPunks as investments. The main allure of CryptoPunks is that they are one of the first ever NFTs on Ethereum. Even Three Arrows Capital, one of the most successful crypto ventures in the space, bought CryptoPunks.

Over time, more holders started incorporating their identities into CryptoPunks to the point that people began to recognize and respect CryptoPunks holders in the cryptocurrency community. Holders recognized the social status it conferred and started changing their profile pictures on social media platforms (like Twitter, Discord, etc.) to CryptoPunks.

CryptoPunks also captures the clout of traditional auction houses. Sotheby's and Christie's, two of the world's largest auction houses, recently listed CryptoPunks and successfully sold rare CryptoPunks at auction for millions of dollars.

except as a"JPEG "Outside of existence, CryptoPunks later became part of LarvaLabs' new project, Meebits."Membership card". Launched in May 2021, Meebits randomly generates 3D characters by a derivative algorithm. Meebits aims to become a digital avatar of the virtual world through interoperability between multiple virtual worlds.

Hashmasks

Hashmasks is a collaborative art project created by more than 70 artists around the world, launched in January 2021. There are only 16384 unique hashmasks in total.

Hashmasks combine the characteristics of digital art and collectibles, and the value is determined by the creator and consumer of the artwork. Unlike other collectibles, where the creator dictates the rarity of all features, Hashmasks include two layers of rarity.

1. Unique Traits - Hashmasks randomly assigns a character, mask, eye color, skin color, and held item during the initial allocation.

2. Names - Hashmasks can be given names. The name is the rarest of all traits, and users can change it by using the Name Changing Token (NCT). Each name is unique and can only belong to one Hashmask.

Neither the value nor the rarity of Hashmasks is pre-set, but the result of long-term changes and changes, and when the last NCT is burned, it will take its final form. Each Hashmask accumulates 10 Renamed Tokens (NCT) every day. When a user owns 1,830 NCTs (roughly equivalent to half a year's worth of NCTs), the user can burn these tokens and modify the name of the Hashmasks. Each name cannot be repeated, which creates a second layer of scarcity in the artwork.

The last batch of NCT will be issued after 10 years (January 26, 2031). At that time, the supply of NCT will decrease as users burn NCT and change their names. When all NCTs are burned, the work of art is complete.

Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Bored Ape Yacht Club

YugaLabs launched The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) on April 30, 2021. Ten thousand unique boring apes are procedurally generated using 170 possible features including backgrounds, clothing, earrings, eyes, fur, hats, mouths and more. The features and designs are heavily inspired by the punk rock and hip-hop genres of the 80s and 90s.

The world of Boring Apes is set in 2031 and these apes hang out in clubs"funny", because they are very rich and boring.

Holders of Boring Ape are granted these privileges at launch: full commercial rights to any Boring Ape, and access to a private"bathroom", the holder can graffiti on the wall.

Since then, some creative owners have created projects around BAYC, such as books, comics, coffee and beer brands.

Bored Ape is one of the few projects that has received significant attention from the National Trust community. Since its launch in April 2021, the project has achieved a number of milestones, includingDonated over $850,000 to an orangutan charity

One of the main reasons for Boring Ape's success is the transparency and constant communication of the project team. Many NFT project creators stop offering any further updates or developments to their projects after the initial sale, but Boring Ape has created a future roadmap and is constantly looking for ways to surprise holders.

For example, there will be a surprise gift (airdrop) in the form of the Bored Ape Dog Club (BAKC). Similar to Meebits, holders of Boring Ape can adopt a dog NFT for free on June 25, 2021. The adoption period is set at one week. During the first six weeks after launch, BAKC generated a 2.5% royalty fee on secondary sales. All proceeds go to animal shelters.

measure scarcity

If you have been in the NFT circle for a while, you will find that people often use"scarcity"The term compliments each other's JPEGs, such as"looks rare"as

aschapter 2As discussed earlier, creators can artificially create scarcity through metadata. For example, an art NFT collection might have 10 pieces, 9 of which are designed in blue, while only one is designed in red. Whether you prefer red or blue, there's no denying that red pieces are rare due to the low supply. Therefore, collectors are interested in these"rare"works are priced higher because of their demonstrable scarcity.

While the value of NFTs is highly speculative and subjective, this is the only way to quantify the value. Since humans are highly social animals, there is usually an instinctive drive to gain"rarest"works and be able to show off their collection. This is what players want in Fortnite"rare skin"Or Pokemon players get the rare Charizard card from the expansion pack making no difference.

As the NFT industry exploded, more tools were built to help improve the collector experience. Two examples of this are rarity.tools and Rarity Sniper, which assign a rarity score based on a collectible's metadata. Users can key in an NFT's token ID and check the score (as long as it's tracked).

In the example above, we can see Rarity.tools (pictured left),"rarest"The CryptoPunk ranks first because it has the highest rarity score (10342.68). An important reason for its high score is its high attribute count of 7 attributes - this is the result of tracking all the common characteristics in the CryptoPunk series.

rarity.tools is a website, and Rarity Sniper operates as a discord bot where users key in the token ID of the NFT on its discord channel. In the example above (pictured right), we can see that Pudgy Penguin #103 has a base score of 96.27, which ranks him 125 in the entire Pudgy Penguins series.

Different scoring tools, each with its own scoring methodology. Some people's NFT may have different results using different tools because they have different weights, but the core data source of NFT is always the same, which comes from the metadata in the smart contract.

in conclusion

Humans have a desire to collect rare and high-level items. Collectibles can be seen as a digital luxury in the crypto world. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in Crypto Twitter, where many anonymous or pseudonymous personalities like to use these collectibles as their personal photos. This is especially prominent among CryptoPunks and BAYC holders.
