Collectibles have always been a unique asset class. People collect all sorts of things like seashells, stamps, cards, fridge magnets, etc. as a hobby or even to show off.

Most of the time, the value of such collectibles is highly speculative. For example, Pokémon trading cards have continued to rise in value since their craze in the late 90s.An unopened box of Pokémon cards soared from $100 to $50,000 in Q1 2021。

CryptoPunks

Looking at it now, the CryptoPunks project has a long and illustrious history.In 2017, John Watkinson and Matt Hall co-created (both later founded Larva Labs) to issue 10,000 CryptoPunks, all avatars are randomly generated by the program, and they are free to claim (the claimant only needs to pay a small amount of Ethereum minting gas fee).

However, attention will only turn to CryptoPunks when celebrities, venture capitalists, and business people start snapping up CryptoPunks as investments. The main allure of CryptoPunks is that they are one of the first ever NFTs on Ethereum. Even Three Arrows Capital, one of the most successful crypto ventures in the space, bought CryptoPunks.

Over time, more holders started incorporating their identities into CryptoPunks to the point that people began to recognize and respect CryptoPunks holders in the cryptocurrency community. Holders recognized the social status it conferred and started changing their profile pictures on social media platforms (like Twitter, Discord, etc.) to CryptoPunks.

CryptoPunks also captures the clout of traditional auction houses. Sotheby's and Christie's, two of the world's largest auction houses, recently listed CryptoPunks and successfully sold rare CryptoPunks at auction for millions of dollars.

Hashmasks

Hashmasks is a collaborative art project created by more than 70 artists around the world, launched in January 2021. There are only 16384 unique hashmasks in total.

Hashmasks combine the characteristics of digital art and collectibles, and the value is determined by the creator and consumer of the artwork. Unlike other collectibles, where the creator dictates the rarity of all features, Hashmasks include two layers of rarity.

1. Unique Traits - Hashmasks randomly assigns a character, mask, eye color, skin color, and held item during the initial allocation.

2. Names - Hashmasks can be given names. The name is the rarest of all traits, and users can change it by using the Name Changing Token (NCT). Each name is unique and can only belong to one Hashmask.

Neither the value nor the rarity of Hashmasks is pre-set, but the result of long-term changes and changes, and when the last NCT is burned, it will take its final form. Each Hashmask accumulates 10 Renamed Tokens (NCT) every day. When a user owns 1,830 NCTs (roughly equivalent to half a year's worth of NCTs), the user can burn these tokens and modify the name of the Hashmasks. Each name cannot be repeated, which creates a second layer of scarcity in the artwork.

The last batch of NCT will be issued after 10 years (January 26, 2031). At that time, the supply of NCT will decrease as users burn NCT and change their names. When all NCTs are burned, the work of art is complete.

Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Bored Ape Yacht Club

YugaLabs launched The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) on April 30, 2021. Ten thousand unique boring apes are procedurally generated using 170 possible features including backgrounds, clothing, earrings, eyes, fur, hats, mouths and more. The features and designs are heavily inspired by the punk rock and hip-hop genres of the 80s and 90s.

While the value of NFTs is highly speculative and subjective, this is the only way to quantify the value.
