How do DAOs transition from the genesis phase to the sustainable second phase?

Original author; twoirtter.eth (@twoirtter)

DAO is like falling in love. It is easy to be passionate, but it is difficult to keep it fresh for a long time. This is a problem that all DAOs are and will face. How to build a sustainable DAO is a difficult problem that all DAOs need to overcome. MetaCartel Ventures is the first VentureDAO after The DAO, followed by MetaCartel Ventures China and The LAO. This experience sharing from MetaCartel Ventures may be worth our careful reading and thinking.

I want to talk about the second phase of DAOs. MetaCartel @VENTURE_DAO was created in February 2020, so we can be considered pioneers in the long history of DAOs. We've been through some things over the past few years, so I want to share some of our experiences and lessons from growing up.

It has to be said that DAOs are like romantic relationships.

At the earliest time, the atmosphere was ambiguous, and there was an impulsive obsession almost to abandon the world. Form and fund a new community, and hold the first community call, by"Ah, I'm doing a DAO!"Promoted by the blood boiling.

But just as the initial heat of romance eventually dissipates, so too will the energy that started the DAO when the heat of novelty and idealism fades a bit. Thus, the ideal began to shine into reality. This can be an unstable time.

Key members could be ghosted, power-hungry operators could go into capture mode, and casual members could be tempted to transfer their coordination talents to a new hot DAO.

Our experience and that of other DAOs has shown that mechanical incentives and token models are not sufficient to overcome these centrifugal forces. This is because the desire for profit is human nature, and only it can sustain and foster a sustainable community.

So, how do DAOs transition from the genesis phase to the sustainable second phase? Here are a few coordination tips for @VentureDAO:

talking on the phone, especially early on

@trentmc0 offered to randomly generate 3 member groups each month. Each group chats with no agenda. This not only creates personal connections, but also strengthens the DAO's internal communication and helps us form our collective atmosphere.

Survival Rituals Guide

It's a moving guide to documenting, disseminating, and iterating on how we actually do things: where and how we communicate, how our deal flow systems work, new member onboarding, dispute resolution, and more.

A key insight about the Survival Rituals Guide is that it recognizes that a DAO's culture and day-to-day functions cannot be framed in advance, but must be revealed through its development experience.

Having this document, which we regularly approve on-chain, which is constantly updated, helps provide social consensus that allows us to operate without having to hand every decision to an (expensive) on-chain vote, or suffer a frustrating Risk of madness.

Governance weekly meeting x2

The development of the DAO is not achieved through TXs on its chain, but through true cooperation among its members. We hold weekly governance calls (1 in the Western Hemisphere and 1 in Asia) to check on our coordination and as a regular process.

see pain as opportunity

Early on, we found that there were a ton of operational hurdles and unbuilt roads between where we were and where we wanted to go. Identifying and overcoming these pain points strengthens our ability to work together and builds foundational trust.

This is part of the story of how we transitioned to the "old couple" model of the DAO. The early spark has given way to a quieter, deeper vibe with mature norms and a down-to-earth path.

Of course, every DAO is different, and @VentureDAO (sub-Dunbar's # has a threshold to join) won't work for every DAO. But the DAO lifecycle is an underexplored but universal dynamic. let's plan together"aged"Original link
