There's a lot of new things to share with the community in this Development Progress Announcement! It mainly includes the following sections:

  • Omni Core 0.7.0 released

  • OmniWallet User Experience Update

  • OmniBOLT Development Progress Update

  • OmniLAB Exam Syllabus

  • OmniLAB Launches OmniWallet Mobile Version

  • Electrum plugin

  • Specification and Documentation Updates (Specification Cleanup)

  • OmniJ and related work

  • Upgrading of Decentralized Exchanges

  • omniwallet.orgsecondary title

Omni Core 0.7.0 released

Thanks to Tether for sponsorship, Omni Core maintainer dexX7 (https://github.com/dexX7/)and Pether Bushnell (https://github.com/Bushstar), founder of Feathercoin, completed and released Omni Core 0.7.0.

This update mainly includes the implementation of faster transaction indexing and an upgrade of the DEX decentralized exchange (described in detail below). In addition, this update integrates all the improvements of Bitcoin Core 0.18.1 into Omni Core.

We have published release notes for this major upgrade on GitHub:

OmniWallet User Experience Update

A talented development team from Rana (https://ranadev.io/) is involved in the new omniwallet.org

development. Omni asked the development team to focus on the usability of the wallet, simplifying the use of common functions, and enabling the wallet to run on the mobile web. The first prototype looks pretty good, and the team shared some samples of the user interface:

OmniBOLT development progress

OmniBOLT is a specification under development based on the fundamental theory of the Lightning Network, describing how assets on the Omni Layer can be transferred and benefited from through Lightning Network channels. We propose this Omni Layer-compatible extension to extend the Lightning Network to support assets on the Omni Layer.

OmniBOLT Daemon (OBD) is the golang language implementation of this specification. It runs as a standalone process connected to Omni Core (version 0.7.0), which provides on-chain services for Omni transactions on the Bitcoin network. The current OBD implementation is tightly bound to Omni Core. Upcoming releases are a set of API services that will allow light clients to communicate with the OBD network. For the Omni community, OBD can simplify the development of applications based on the Lightning Network.

Development overview:

1. Use the Hierarchical Deterministic mechanism to create and manage OBD users' wallet addresses, private keys, and mnemonics.

2. The hash time lock contract HTLC (Hashed Timelock Contract) was developed on a single OBD node, and a large number of tests were carried out.

3. Updated the OBD test process and documents.

4. Updated the OBD API online documentation (https://api.omnilab.online/), and completed the API description related to the Hash Time Lock Contract (HTLC).

5. Updated the README.md file of the OBD code warehouse (https://github.com/LightningOnOmnilayer/LightningOnOmni). This document is a beginner's guide for OBD users.

6. Released an OBD demonstration video.

7. The continuous development and improvement of the OBD data query interface, the interface for querying user-related information has been added.

We still have the following tasks to complete:

1. Work with the Omni Core team, which is developing a new interface for Omni transactions to support SegWit. In order to verify the idea, we currently use some tricks to avoid using SegWit, the function can be realized and work normally, but it is not safe enough. We will update the code base shortly after the new interface for Omni Core is finalized.

2. Larger range of Hash Time Lock Contract (HTLC) testing.

3. Try to connect OBD with LND network. At least our first step was to be able to connect to the existing onion network.

4. We can develop our own network module so that OBD nodes can communicate with each other.

5. Complete the routing discovery/lookup algorithm, and transfer between multiple OBD nodes and any number of clients.

OmniLAB Certification Training Program

OmniLAB has launched a certification training program and released its exam outline, aiming to guide programmers or other audiences with relatively weak blockchain knowledge, understand the background, basic theory and application of blockchain, and master the basic concepts of blockchain, Technical processes, standards and application scenarios. After candidates pass the exams offered by OmniLAB, they may become experts with blockchain product and application development capabilities. We are looking for partner organizations around the world to promote our certification standards as well as Omni's technical culture.

As of now, OmniLAB's strategic partners include:Carbon chain value、as well as、as well asUniversity Blockchain Technology Community (BTCU). (names not listed in order)

OmniLAB will launch OmniWallet for mobile

We are still developing the mobile version of OmniWallet, and the test installation package has been uploaded to the GitHub code repository. The mobile version of OmniWallet is the native wallet app for assets on the Omni Layer, available in both Android and iOS versions. Currently supports Bitcoin and asset management on all Omni Layers, providing users with a high degree of ease of use and security. The wallet is completely open source and includes a set of standard backend services written in Java/golang, and a mobile app written in Dart (Google's Flutter framework).

Electrum plugin

A development team has created an electrum wallet plugin that supports assets on the Omni Layer. This will enable any electrum-based wallet to directly use Omni Layer assets such as USDT. These functions have not been integrated into the official electrum client, but can be tested through this link:https://github.com/

Standardization and documentation work

We recently started a project to update the Omni protocol specification and its associated technical documentation. This work will ultimately include:

  • Convert documentation from GitHub's basic markdown format to the more fully-featured AsciiDoc markdown format.

  • Removed obsolete parts of the specification to focus on the details of the protocol itself.

  • Specifications updated to include details of Class C transactions and other features.

We also created a code repository for the Omni Layer documentation project. The README of this code repository contains links to important existing documentation. (If a document is missing, please let us know by submitting a PR.) This repository also has a table of contents that includes our first steps towards implementing Omni Layer Enhancement Proposals (OLEs), which are equivalent to Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs) in Omni.

OmniJ and related work

OmniJ lead developer, Sean Gilligan (https://github.com/msgilligan),has been committed tobitcoinjImprovements and OpenJDK-based wallet framework technology, the latter will allow us to build an Omni Layer wallet based on bticoinj that can eventually be deployed on mobile, desktop or server. Because bitcoinj has an SPV model, this architecture provides good decentralization features on the Bitcoin Layer, and only depends on the Omni Core API server. OmniJ's initial development focus is on the desktop wallet, which should appear in alpha testing. OmniJ will also eventually be upgraded to support C-level transactions.

DEx upgrade

Omni Layer provides a completely decentralized exchange mechanism on the Bitcoin blockchain: one of the functions allows you to freely convert between BTC and OMNI tokens, and the other function is the transaction between Omni Layer tokens ( For example, the transaction between USDT and MaidSafe). The team refers to these as DEx and MetaDEx. With the upgrade of Omni Core 0.7.0 version and the upcoming upgrade of the OmniWallet interface, the team finally wants to set up a DEx on the Bitcoin blockchain that can directly exchange BTC with any Omni Layer token. The team is researching the functional interface in OmniWallet and the corresponding RPC calls in Omni Core, activating the functions required for this feature to take effect at the right time, and the transaction will be broadcast to the blockchain.

Omniwallet.org Restrictions on Accessible Regions and Functions

Due to legal and regulatory restrictions that prohibit the export of services and technology to certain countries, the team has decided that Omniwallet.org is now blocking all connections from the following countries:

  • cuba

  • Iran

  • North Korea

  • Sudan

  • Syria

Also, in the upcoming new version of Omniwallet.org, American users will not be able to use Omni Layer's on-chain distributed exchange on the Bitcoin protocol through Omniwallet.org. Other wallet functionality will not be affected, read-only information on trades and quotes from DEx will continue to be maintained on Omniwallet and Omniexplorer. While this was a difficult decision, it empowers the Omni development team to continue creating cutting-edge decentralized technology to benefit all users.
