Odaily reports: Canadian man Ryan James Roach has been extradited from Canada to the United States for allegedly breaching university computers, stealing login credentials, and secretly mining cryptocurrency. Prosecutors allege that Ryan James Roach and Mathiew James Stubbings carried out attacks between June 2016 and December 2019 against educational institutions in multiple U.S. states that operated supercomputers.

The indictment alleges the two used malware to steal credentials and direct the compromised computers to mine crypto. The affected institutions are located in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Ryan James Roach was extradited on October 28; extradition proceedings for Mathiew James Stubbings are still ongoing in Canada. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. (Decrypt)
