Losses exceeding HK$4.5 million: Hong Kong woman in her sixties falls victim to fake tenant in cryptocurrency investment scam

Odaily reports: Hong Kong police stated that over the past week, they received more than 50 reports of investment fraud cases, involving losses exceeding HK$30 million. Among them, a retired woman in her sixties earlier met a man on a property trading platform who claimed to be interested in renting a flat. The man claimed to be an investment expert and persuaded her to invest in cryptocurrency, providing a fake investment website. The woman made 20 separate purchases of USDT at physical cryptocurrency exchange shops and transferred the funds to wallets designated by the man, purportedly to "buy ETH." Initially, she was able to withdraw some funds; later, when she applied to withdraw, the man demanded she first pay USDT equivalent to approximately HK$7 million as "tax," at which point she realized she had been scammed, ultimately losing more than HK$4.5 million.
