CoreWeave Seeks Insurance Funding for AI Expansion, Chip-Backed Financing Surpasses $35 Billion

Odaily News: Nvidia-backed AI cloud provider CoreWeave is seeking to tap into the massive capital pools of insurance companies to lower the financing costs it bears for purchasing AI chips and building infrastructure. CoreWeave co-founder Brannin McBee, who oversees financing operations, said that if the company can get more chip-collateralized debt investment-grade ratings and ultimately improve its own credit rating, it will have the opportunity to access the insurance capital market. He noted that the insurance industry's capital pool is "almost limitless," because "all the money sitting in insurance capital pools represents one of the largest sources of funds in the world."

Earlier this year, CoreWeave secured an $8.5 billion loan backed by Nvidia chips and long-term usage contracts with Meta. CoreWeave's next step is to attract insurance companies to purchase loans backed by lower-rated clients, such as financing related to AI labs. Since the beginning of this year, the company has raised over $35 billion through chip-backed loans, high-yield bonds, convertible bonds, and stock offerings. As of the end of June, the company's debt and lease obligations stood at approximately $52 billion. (Financial Times)
