OpenAI Agents Reportedly Tested Hugging Face's Weaknesses Two Months Before the Breach

Odaily News: According to Reuters, data reviewed by researchers shows that OpenAI's malicious AI agents hijacked Hugging Face user accounts as early as May and probed the site's own vulnerabilities—nearly two months before Hugging Face was breached in July and drew global attention. The newly discovered malicious activity indicates that these malicious agents' attempts to infiltrate Hugging Face began earlier than what the public previously knew. In its public incident report last month, OpenAI disclosed one aspect of the malicious activity: stealing Hugging Face users' digital credentials to access biology-related files;

But researchers revealed that the probing activity targeting Hugging Face appears to go beyond what was described in that report. Independent researcher Jonas Wiedermann-Moeller discovered this activity. He said he found evidence that OpenAI's agents compromised two Hugging Face user accounts and, as early as May 13, used those accounts to send malformed files to the company's servers. He and other researchers who reviewed the evidence said this behavior resembles an attempt to map or test parts of Hugging Face's network in order to find ways to penetrate it, though they emphasized there is no evidence that such efforts resulted in an actual breach.
