Russia Rolls Out Digital Ruble Nationwide, Adds 87,000 Accounts and Processes Over 50,000 Transactions in 10 Days

2026-09-14 01:39

Odaily reports: Elvira Nabiullina, Governor of the Bank of Russia, stated that the digital ruble went live nationwide on September 1, with nearly 87,000 new accounts added over the past 10 days and over 50,000 related transactions completed.

She noted that a small number of banks experienced technical issues when opening accounts and executing certain transactions. The banks involved have since resolved the problems, with no widespread outages or large volume of complaints reported. The Bank of Russia is working to reduce the number of steps required for account opening and transactions while maintaining security standards.

The digital ruble completed its nationwide rollout following real-user testing that began in 2023, and users can choose whether to use it at their own discretion. Starting September 1, 12 major Russian banks and retailers with annual revenue exceeding 120 million rubles (approximately $1.42 million) are required to accept digital ruble payments, with more businesses to be gradually onboarded by 2028.
