Solana Core Protocol to Gradually Eliminate Floating-Point Operations to Avoid Consensus Divergence Risks
Odaily Planet Daily News Anza announced that it is gradually removing floating-point operations from the Solana core protocol. The first layer of improvements, SIMD-0391, has been activated on mainnet Beta at epoch 1026, replacing floating-point operations in the Stake Program and validator client warm-up and cool-down logic with fixed-point arithmetic. The second layer of improvements, SIMD-0607, has been proposed and is now under review, aiming to address the runtime itself by removing floating-point operations from inflation reward and rent calculation pathways. Anza stated that floating-point operations on different hardware, validator clients, and compilers may produce different rounding results, which can lead to consensus divergence and network liveness risks. Both improvements aim to eliminate these risks through standardized fixed-point arithmetic, and further efforts will continue to address floating-point operations in other pathways.
