Iceland Referendum Rejects Restarting EU Accession Talks, MiCA Not Applicable for Now

2026-08-31 04:33

Odaily News: Iceland held a referendum on August 30, with 52.8% of voters, totaling 105,339 votes, opposing the restart of EU accession negotiations. This outcome allows Iceland to maintain its status as a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and remain within the Schengen Agreement framework.

As an EEA member rather than an EU member state, Iceland does not automatically apply the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Crypto activities are primarily regulated under general financial laws. MiCA is expected to be incorporated into the EEA Agreement in the future, but no official timeline has been set yet.
