OpenAI and Cursor End Nearly Four-Year Partnership, Direct Model Supply to Cease on November 12

2026-08-29 03:39

Odaily News: OpenAI has announced the end of its nearly four-year partnership with Cursor. Going forward, new OpenAI models will no longer be integrated into Cursor, with direct supply of existing models slated to cease on November 12, 2026. Two weeks prior, SpaceX completed a $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, and under the terms of their contract, OpenAI holds the right to terminate the partnership following the acquisition.

OpenAI stated that this decision is tied to trust concerns regarding companies owned by Elon Musk, citing violations of OpenAI contracts after Twitter's acquisition, as well as xAI's previous unauthorized use of OpenAI models. Based on these factors, OpenAI believes that continuing to provide new models to Cursor post-acquisition by SpaceX poses significant risks.
