Suspect in UnitedHealth高管枪杀案 pleads guilty to federal charges

Odaily News: Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, has pleaded guilty in court to his federal criminal case. This plea agreement will avoid a federal trial in this high-profile case. Additionally, the plea may allow Mangione to seek dismissal of the murder charges against him in New York State and delay an upcoming state trial.

Mangione currently faces both federal and state charges. In January, a judge dismissed federal murder and firearms-related charges against Mangione, eliminating the possibility of the death penalty in his federal case. However, if he is convicted on the remaining two federal stalking charges, he could still face life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Regarding the state-level charges, Mangione had previously faced multiple charges including second-degree murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and possession of false identification documents. He has pleaded not guilty to all of them. Resolving the federal case may allow Mangione to seek dismissal of the second-degree murder charge under New York State law, which is designed to protect individuals from being prosecuted twice for the same act. However, prosecutors are expected to oppose this.

The state trial is scheduled for September 8. If convicted of second-degree murder, Mangione faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

On December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, was fatally shot outside a hotel in Manhattan, New York City. A masked gunman waited outside the hotel in advance and fired multiple shots at Thompson upon his arrival before fleeing the scene. Five days later, Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania.
