CZ responds to Bitcoin loss data: If the data is accurate, keeping cryptocurrency on exchanges is safer than self-custody

2026-08-04 06:55

Odaily reported that CZ forwarded Willy Woo's post regarding Bitcoin loss data, stating that if the data is accurate, from a statistical perspective, assets held on exchanges may be safer than self-custody. Exchange hacks are easier to track statistically, while losses from self-custody wallets being compromised or assets being lost are often not publicly disclosed, making such data harder to collect. On the other hand, exchange data is also influenced by exchanges that have already collapsed. Finally, CZ emphasized that neither custody method is absolutely superior—different solutions suit different users, and a balanced approach to asset custody may be the better choice.

Willy Woo previously released statistics showing that approximately 1.57 million Bitcoin have been permanently lost due to self-custody. Additionally, exchanges have accumulated losses of around 1.51 million Bitcoin due to hacks, collapses, and other incidents.
