U.S. and Iranian Officials Say Iran and Oman Are Close to Reaching an Agreement on Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Odaily News – On the 3rd, U.S. sources cited Iranian and American officials as saying that Iran and Oman are close to reaching an agreement regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. sources, under the agreement being discussed, vessels entering the Persian Gulf would travel through a waterway near the Iranian coast controlled by Iran, while vessels exiting would use a route close to Oman.

Several Iranian officials stated that ships passing through would be required to pay a "service fee," with the revenue to be split evenly between Iran and Oman. However, a U.S. official familiar with the negotiations said the Iranian officials' description was "inaccurate," and that the establishment of any "temporary" waterway in the Strait of Hormuz would not require Iran's approval, nor would fees be charged to passing vessels.
