Odaily News: A group of Democratic U.S. senators has sent a letter to Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Michael Selig, urging the agency to ban trading on prediction markets tied to California wildfire events, expressing concerns that traders could be incentivized to deliberately start fires for financial gain.
The letter, led by Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, highlights that during the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025, related prediction markets generated approximately $1.2 million in trading volume. Among these, the market predicting when the Palisades Fire would be fully contained saw $711,600 in traded volume, with the largest single wager reaching approximately $274,800. The majority of funds were bet on later containment dates.
According to reports, new rules proposed by the CFTC on June 10 would require case-by-case review of prediction market contracts, covering categories such as terrorism, assassination, war, gambling, and illegal activities.
