Odaily News: The Central Bank of Brazil disclosed that in the first half of 2026, Brazil's crypto asset purchases reached $14.68 billion, a 135% increase compared to $6.24 billion in the first half of 2025. The statistics include transactions of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins processed by registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).
In June, Brazil's crypto asset purchases totaled $2.54 billion, up from $1.48 billion in June 2025. In May, stablecoin purchases were close to $2.632 billion, a 158% increase from May 2025. Fernando Rocha, head of the statistics department at the Central Bank of Brazil, stated that the country's crypto asset market has passed its initial phase and is now expanding and exploring application scenarios.
Fernando Rocha noted that demand growth is driven by dollar-pegged stablecoins, which account for over 90% of demand and are used for payments and cross-border settlements. The Central Bank of Brazil will classify VASPs under Class 3. Once this takes effect in January 2027, these institutions will be required to adhere to the same standards as securities brokers, securities distributors, and foreign exchange brokerage firms.
