Guterres condemns Houthi attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea

Odaily Odaily reported on July 24 that UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric issued a statement on behalf of the Secretary-General, expressing that Secretary-General António Guterres is deeply alarmed by the Houthi's resumption of attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Red Sea and the renewed threats to maritime navigation. The statement indicated that such actions could further exacerbate regional tensions and potentially drag Yemen deeper into regional conflict. The statement warned that continued deterioration of the situation in Yemen would undermine peace prospects and cause severe economic, humanitarian, and environmental impacts both regionally and beyond. Guterres called on all parties to immediately de-escalate the situation, urging the Houthis to cease all further attacks or other escalatory actions, and to strictly comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2722 and subsequent relevant resolutions on protecting commercial vessels and maintaining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Guterres also emphasized that international navigation rights and freedom of navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and its surrounding waters must be fully restored. (CCTV News)
