Odaily reported that, according to the Wall Street Journal, the European Union stated that Meta has failed to adequately protect users from harmful, addictive designs on Instagram and Facebook. The EU is therefore escalating its investigation, and the company could face significant fines. The European Commission released preliminary findings on Friday, concluding that Meta violated the EU's landmark Digital Services Act. The law requires the world's largest online platforms to assess and mitigate risks. If the findings are confirmed, each of Meta's platforms could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
