Odaily Odaily reports that sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Zhipu AI is evaluating the possibility of designing its own AI chips. This move aims to address the rapidly growing demand for its open-source GLM series models and the shortage of computing resources caused by U.S. export restrictions. The company has recently held preliminary discussions with several Chinese chip design companies to explore the collaborative development of a custom AI processor optimized for its model deployment scenarios.

Zhipu AI is one of China's leading AI large model companies, with its GLM series models gaining attention for their open-source strategy and performance. As the scale of large model applications expands, high-performance computing resources have become a critical bottleneck for AI enterprises. Developing proprietary chips is seen as a pathway to reduce dependence on external GPU supplies and improve computing efficiency.
